Installed a New Wordpress Blog? Then what? Do you know that after installing your Wordpress you need to make some changes to it? Yes, it is very much recommended to make this changes because they all are required. So, in this post I will give you the list of what are those settings which you need to do after installing a wordpress blog.

Wordpress Settings

1. Change your Username

The default login ID of Wordpress will be admin. But you have to be careful to save your account from any Hacker, So it is advisable to change your login ID to something more unusual to make it secure.  Use more complex password then using simple combination, as this will decrease your chances of being used by someone else.

2. Disable User Registration

This setting is not required for those who do not have their registered users can comment or revenue sharing blog, there is no point of enabling user registration on your blog. You can disable it under Settings > General.

3. Time Zone

If you schedule your blog posts, changing time zone to your time zone will ensure your blog posts will be published in your desired schedule time.Under Settings> General , Change the time Zone to match your country time zone.

4. Comment Gravatar

You will know that by default the Gravatar will be enabled. And those commentators have Gravatar on there account will show it, but what about the people who don’t use it. They will show a default Gravatar logo, you can change it by going Under Settings > Discussion, you can change the default image to be shown for people who have not signed up for Gravatar.

5. Change Your Permalink

By default your Wordpress site’s permalink will be something like this http://yourdomain.com/p=123 and do you know by keeping it as it is, you are missing many things? The main thing is Traffic from Search Engine. If you have your permalink something like I have http://sahilkotak.com/post-name/ it would be more effective. You can change your permalink from Settings > Permalinks.

6. Allowing Search Engines To Index

This is most important thing for any blog, when you install a new Wordpress blog it won’t be allowing Search engines to index your blog. So, for enabling it you need to go to Settings> Privacy Enable, and then mark   “your blog is visible to search engine”.

7. Making Comment System Better

I have seen many users finding a plugin for Threaded Comments because Threaded comments make your blog comments discussion keep going. But, you don’t need a plugin for it now because with the latest versions of wordpress, you can enable Threaded comment from Settings> Discussion.   Check Enable Threaded comment and uncheck Break comments into pages to avoid page duplication issue.

Conclusion

Wordpress is the blogging tool and you can do many things in it to make it better from the default one. If you follow the above steps then they would be surely helpful in making your blog better.

Sahil, it’s been ages since I installed a new WordPress blog to actually use it solely as a blog. So, I was wondering if your second point really is true. By default, are user registerations turned off? Last time I checked, they weren’t and I would expect the WordPress team to have it off at the beginning because there are more single author blogs than coauthor blogs; but of course, things may have changed now.

Thanks.

These are pretty standard things must for every blog. Thanks for the share. There’s something special about reiterating them from time to time. Keeps you in the WordPress groove.

That is a good list for newbie bloggers and I think we can use under construction themes to do this and readers will know what we are preparing and coming back on time. Is that a good idea?

This is a very good list for people new to wordpress! Especially the permalink structured is very important for your page to be found in google. Have to agree though that a fresh installed wordpress can only benefit from a few plugins to be installed, such as akismet and all-in-one-seo.
